lethargic_man: (reflect)
We had a meeting at work on Friday at which we learned (inter alia) that one of my work colleagues is having a sex change. Bit of a surprise there, but not as much as you might have expected; it made sense, in that he* was known to wear high heels and black nail varnish. (At the time, I just put that down to him being a goth.)

* I'm sure she will have thought of herself as "she" for some time beforehand; but given that he played his part in society as a man, and we all knew him as such, I'm not going to try switching which sex I think of her as retroactively.

I've known transsexuals beforehand both before (an old work colleague who transitioned after leaving my department) and after (<waves>) their change, but I've never got to see someone go through their transition before; this will be interesting to watch from the sidelines (provided we both, of course, stay with the company). In work officialdom, she switched to her new identity from today (yesterday being a Bank Holiday). I didn't get to speak to her today (she's not in my department), but she did turn up again today, from the glimpse I got as I walked past, in male attire.

That doesn't exactly make it easy for us to start thinking of her as "she", when everything in her appearance (presumably still stubbly chin included) militates against it. But I suppose I shouldn't complain, as any cognitive contortions we might have to go through pale into comparison to what she will already have started going through.
