[livejournal.com profile] aviva_m and I have just come back from holidaying in Ireland. The country is on my doorstep, but I'd never been there before. Amongst the places we visited was one of if not the oldest fossil trackway known in the world:

It's where a primitive amphibian left its footprints behind as it wandered across a beach 385 million years ago:

If you look closely you can also see the groove its tail left behind as it dragged behind it:

Here in the UK the Irish are often the butt of jokes; I always assumed the source of that was just neighbour-rivalry; but a few of the things I saw did make me wonder:

Not only has the city council either placed the flowers where it blocks the billboard, or the billboard immediately behind the flowers; but several companies (as it's a scrolling billboard) have furthermore parted with good money to place their adverts on a billboard where they can't be seen. I was also amused by this:

No, there aren't children crossing the road ahead. There's an iron fence ahead! Finally, here's a sign (not in Ireland!) which amused me on my train journey home:

Our new office at work has just been opened, and the Queen's Award presented, by Her Majesty's representative in Islington, the Deputy Lieutenant (the Lord Lieutenant being otherwise engaged), Colonel Kay.

At some point I am going to be able to hear this name and keep a straight face... but not yet.
